Double congratulations to +Marissa Mayer on her appointment as +Yahoo!'s new CEO and her pregnancy. Ms Mayer has ended her 13 years stint as 20th employee of +Google to take up a new role as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Member of the Board of Directors at Yahoo, effective July 17, 2012.
Ms Mayer will be Yahoo's fifth CEO in last five years as the company struggles to rebound from financial malaise and internal turmoil. She, a math whiz, grew up in Wausau, Wisconsin and began her career at Google in 1999 after getting her master's degree in computer science from +Stanford University.
Ms Mayer, during her time at Google, led teams that produced many of the Google’s most popular products such as search, iconic and patented homepage, +Gmail, Google News, etc. Her talk on uncluttered look and feel of Google products and Split A/B testing at 2008 Google IO Keynote is one of the most popular videos on the Internet.
Going from managing simple and sober Google homepage to cluttered and crowded Yahoo homepage, Ms Mayer has her work cut out for her. With dwindling shares, massive layoffs, internal turbulent work environment, innovation-wise dead in the water perception about Yahoo galore, I think it is a bold move that she has made by moving to Yahoo. If she is looking for a challenge, I believe she has found herself a big one. And if she pulls it off then it will be one of the biggest turnaround in history of Silicon Valley. Pressure is ON.
